Method of cleaning textiles based on the use
of volatile solvents that dissolve grease;
for example, trichloroethylene. No water is
used. Dry-cleaning was first developed in
France in 1849. Some solvents are known to
damage the ozone layer and one,
perchloroethylene, is toxic in water and
gives off toxic fumes when heated.
